In the spirit of the rent party tradition, which offered a DIY solution for families facing eviction in the 1920s while playing a major role in the historic development of jazz and blues music, South Oakland Shelter presents:  The Rent Party.

The event was held on Saturday, June 2nd at the former Stanley Kresge estate - renovated by Paddy Lynch - in the Arden Park-East Boston Edison Historic District. The event featured three stages of jazz, including RJ Spängler's Planet D Nonet with special guest Thornetta Davis, Audio Birds, and the Michael L. Jellick Quartet, with a delicious strolling dinner, open bay, and special pre-party estate tours for VIP guests.

Featured Musicians:

Thornetta Davis - Crowned “Detroit’s Queen of the Blues,” Thornetta Davis is a multi-talented International Singer and Songwriter from Detroit MI, USA and is the Winner of over 30 Detroit Music Awards. Her voice is strong, commanding, melodic and smooth. She tells her stories with incredible delivery and leaves her audiences wanting more.

Planet D Nonet - "A down & dirty little swing band from Detroit" was founded by drummer RJ Spangler and trumpeter James O’Donnell. The Planet D Nonet is about swing, blues, space-age jazz and classic American songs all served with plenty of good humor with an eye toward turning people onto this kind of music.

Michael Jellick - Born in New Delhi, India, and raised in Michigan, Jellick is one of the most sought-after pianists in the Midwest. He draws from classical and jazz influences in his jazz playing and writing. Jellick has his own studio where he teaches jazz and classical theory and performance.

Audio Birds - This trio consists of... Sean Blackman (guitarist) is an established composer, producer, performer and educator of collaborative cross-cultural world music. Sean was recently honored in 2016 with the 'Spirit of Detroit Award’ by the City Council of Detroit... Larry Fratangelo (percussionist) has recorded and toured with some of the top recording artists in the world today. His name appears on Gold, Platinum and Grammy award-winning albums... James Simonson (bassist) is the Musical Director for Verve Artist Bettye LaVette, is an Ernie Ball/Ampeg Artist, he performs with global giants from Andrea Bocelli to the Detroit Symphony and many others in all genres of music.
