South Oakland Shelter (SOS) is pleased to present our 10th annual Dancing with the Detroit Stars gala event to be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 7 pm until midnight at The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. We hope you will join us for an electrifying evening filled with twists, twirls, and intrigue—all for a good cause.

The star-studded evening, produced by Gail & Rice, includes a silent auction with unique, desirable items and dance music spun by the popular DJ Prevu. Local celebrities train with professional dancers, from Arthur Murray Dance Studio, for weeks leading up to one night of intense competition in front of a panel of judges and a sold-out audience. You won’t be able to stay in your seat as five couples battle for the top prize.

The evening’s proceeds will directly benefit the homeless men, women, and children in our community.  Since our founding, we have cared for more than 12,208 homeless children and adults. Partnering with 83 congregations, SOS operates a rotating shelter system to house and feed the homeless populations. Annually, over 8,000 volunteers commit approximately 42,000 hours of in-kind support to provide over 33,000 meals and 11,000 nights of shelter.

We look forward to seeing you and your guests for what promises to be an exceptional experience.

Meet the Dancers

Eric Fadie - The Detroit Cast
Eric has worked on The Detroit Cast for 5 years and it was the best decision he has made. The podcast has grown bigger than even he thought and continues to grow.  He also regularly performs stand-up comedy throughout the state.  Eric and The Detroit Cast found South Oakland Shelter when they were looking to do a charity drive and thought raising money and awareness for the homeless seemed like the perfect cause.  Eric is the returning "Top Fundraiser" champion from our 2017 event and has raised over $50,000 for SOS through his fundraising events. This year, he is dancing with a long-time supporter of The Detroit Cast, Tara Szott Wasik. To support Eric and Tara, donate to their fundraising page here.

Tara Szott Wasik - Szott Automotive Group
Tara joined forces with Eric Fadie in the hopes to become the top fundraising duo for the 2018 Dancing with the Detroit Stars event. She comes from the Szott Automotive Group that sponsors The Detroit Cast, and her husband's company Wasik Insurance Services is also a sponsor. For the past two years, Tara has been involved with The Kiefer Foundation after the death of her son's best friend who was killed by a distracted driver at the age of 18. To support Eric and Tara's fundraising efforts, donate to their page here.

Angel Lavery - Brother Rice High School
Angel grew up in San Francisco, CA before attending the University of California, Berkeley. She currently lives in Bloomfield Hills with her husband and 2 kids.  Angel has an extensive dance background as a former San Francisco 49ers cheerleader. She recently performed at the 2018 press release of the North Atlantic International Auto Show and is the Artistic Director and co-founder of Ballet Edge Detroit. She works as a math teacher at Brother Rice High School, teaching Algebra, Geometry, and Pre-calculus to 9th-12th graders. To donate to Angel's fundraising page, click here.

Chef Eric Avila - The Townsend Hotel
Eric originally hails from California, but recently came to Michigan to work as the Executive Sous Chef at The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. He oversees the banquet operations at The Townsend, including the food served at Dancing with the Detroit Stars. He's the talent behind the delicious feast presented in 2017. After seeing last year's event, he just had to come aboard as a dancer for 2018. To support Chef Eric's fundraising effort, please visit his fundraising page here.

Kelli Robinson - Stella & Dot
Kelli is a Stylist, Senior Director, and Founding Leader at the popular jewelry company Stella & Dot and is one of the top salespeople for the company in the metro-Detroit area. Kelli has donated silent auction packages to Dancing with the Detroit Stars in the past on behalf of Stella & Dot, so she's upping her game and joining the event as a dancer this year. To donate to Kelli's fundraising page, click here.

Alexandria T. Riley - City of Pontiac

Alexandria is the Chief Development Officer for the City of Pontiac, her responsibilities include contract compliance and the acquisition of outside funds through grants and other public and private investment.  Prior to her role in government, Alexandria worked as an entrepreneur and is a Licensed Builder and a Licensed Real Estate Broker. Alexandria's ties to our mission of building communities that end homelessness are clear as the former Vice President of the Pontiac Housing Commission and former Workforce Development Consultant to Michigan WORKS!
